My name is Benny Smith, and I was born in Reno, Nevada, on January 11, 2008, under extraordinarily challenging circumstances. My biological parents struggled with addiction, using hard drugs and alcohol throughout my time in the womb. As a result, I was born addicted to crack cocaine, exposed to other substances, and spent my earliest moments on the streets. At birth, I was taken from my biological parents and faced the grueling process of withdrawal from drug addiction as a newborn.
Fortunately, my story took a hopeful turn when my adoptive parents, who had just begun fostering children, welcomed me and my two-year-old sister, Calissa, into their home. I was just three weeks old, and they embraced us with open hearts. They went on to foster nine children, ultimately adopting seven, including Calissa and me. Their love, care, and prayers transformed my life, helping me grow from a fragile infant into a healthy, determined young boy.
The first year of my life was undoubtedly tough, but I don’t dwell on excuses. Like everyone, I’ve faced hurdles, and I’ve learned that overcoming them builds character. As the youngest of ten siblings—seven adopted and three biological—I grew up in a bustling, loving household. Though many of my siblings have since moved on to their own paths, the tight bond we share remains a cornerstone of who I am. Their influence, alongside my parents’ unwavering support, has shaped my resilience and sense of family.
At five years old, I found my true passion when my parents enrolled me in Pop Warner Football in Sparks, Nevada. On the field, I discovered my place—a sense of belonging and purpose that has driven me ever since. Football became more than a game; it became a way to channel my energy, build confidence, and honor the family who gave me a second chance. From that first snap to today, I’ve carried the lessons of perseverance and teamwork with me, both on and off the field.
My journey hasn’t been easy, but it’s mine, and I’m proud of it. With the love of my family and the fire of football in my heart, I’m ready for whatever challenges lie ahead.
